RAILROADERS OUTHIT RAILCATS BUT STILL FALL 13-5

GARY, INDIANA (July 19, 2022)– Zach Nehrir’s 3-RBI night was not enough as the Railroaders fell to the RailCats in the first game of a pivotal three-game set 13-5 on Tuesday July 19 at the U.S. Steel Yard.

BOX SCORE

Cleburne managed to outhit Gary 11-to-10 but couldn’t achieve the same feat in the column that mattered.

Nehrir started the scoring for Cleburne in the top of the third, singling home Edwin Arroyo to put the Railroaders up 1-0. The RailCats, however, didn’t like being down as they exploded for five in the fourth inning off Cleburne starter Garrett Alexander.

The Railroaders responded in the top of the fifth with a solo shot off the bat of Nehrir to put Cleburne within three at 5-2. Gary put up six in the bottom half of the frame to blow the doors off the contest and send them sailing to the victory and sole possession of fourth place in the East Division.

Gary would muster two more across in the bottom of the eighth off Austin Fairchild.

The Railroaders sent eight to the plate in the ninth and scored three runs off a Nehrir ground out and an Eddie Hernandez two-run shot, but it was too little too late.

Edwin Arroyo, Chuck Taylor, Kacy Clemens, and Nehrir all had multi-hit games. Clemens extended his hit streak to a league-high 17 games.

Alexander picked up the loss, going 4.1 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits while walking four and striking out six.

Brendan Bell was roughed up in just a third of an inning, giving up four runs on four hits while walking two. Kevin McCarthy put up 2.1 innings of scoreless work while Austin Fairchild struggled with command, walking three and allowing two runs to score.

The series continues Wednesday at 6:45 p.m., with pregame coverage starting a 6:30 p.m. on AABaseball.tv and on the Railroader Radio Network.
