Goldeyes Claim Series with Game Two Win
CLEBURNE, Tex. (June 16, 2021) – The Winnipeg Goldeyes clinched a series win with a 10-4 victory over the Cleburne Railroaders on Wednesday night at The Depot at Cleburne Station.
The Goldeyes (10-14) scored in five of the final six innings, including three in the sixth and four in the ninth. Max Murphy led the way with five hits, all singles, scoring three runs.
Cleburne (11-15) dropped a fifth consecutive game, managing nine hits on the night against Winnipeg starter Eduard Reyes (3-2) and three relievers. The Railroaders scratched out a run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single from Ramon Hernandez, then plated three in the bottom of the ninth on a two-run single from Colton Pogue and a run-scoring hit from Tyler Ryan for the final margin.
Reyes and Cleburne starter Austin Fairchild (1-3) traded zeroes through the first three innings before Winnipeg pushed across single runs in the fourth and fifth innings. A sacrifice fly for Raul Navarro got the scoring started, then Wes Darvill doubled the advantage with an RBI groundout. The Goldeyes blew the game open in the sixth with a trio of runs, highlighted by a two-run double from Navarro.
After Winnipeg extended the lead to 6-1 with another run in the seventh, the Railroaders turned the ball over to catcher John Nester for the final two innings on the mound. Nester tossed a 1-2-3 eighth inning on just four pitches, but was touched up for four runs in the top of the ninth. Kyle Martin launched his seventh home run of the season in the frame, a three-run shot down the line in right. Nester ended the inning with a strikeout, his seventh career punchout.
The Railroaders and Goldeyes conclude the series on Thursday at 7:06 PM. Winnipeg starts right-hander Pete Perez (0-0, 2.89), while the Railroaders have not yet announced their starter.
